The Power of the Mind-Body Connection with Dr. Serena Sterling

In this episode, I am talking with the author of the bestselling book, Pain: A Love Story, Dr. Serena Sterling. She has a masters in international journalism, a doctorate in clinical psychology and is a certified life coach. We discuss the power of the mind-body connection and how unresolved emotions can manifest as pain.

Show Notes:

02:32 Serena’s Story

Serena helps people with physical and emotional pain feel better fast. She got into this work because of her own chronic health issues. In a very demanding time in her life, she experienced the trauma of 9/11 firsthand. From there, fatigue started overtaking her life. After some discouraging guidance from doctors, she discovered a mind-body technique that was life changing.

06:03 Messages from Our Bodies

Serena offers her advice for people that may be dealing with some degree of related issues. She has dealt with many doctors over the years, and recommends not taking no for an answer. She explains the mind-body connection and we talk about taking symptoms as direct messages from our bodies.

12:57 Understanding and Differentiating Symptoms

It’s helpful to rule things out when you’re understanding your symptoms, especially if you’ve gone down the medical route. You can do an audit in your life and think about all of the things that are stressing you out.

16:19 A Conscious Manifestation of Pain

Serena has dealt with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis from a young age. She craved the attention that she received from her family when she was sick. So she decided to pretend that she had pain. After visiting a variety of doctors, she was told she was fine. But eventually, she received a diagnosis. This manifestation demonstrates the power of the mind-body connection.

20:29 Dealing with Anxiety and Physical Tension

If you deal with anxiety, Serena shares some methods for relieving the cycle of those anxious thoughts. Some methods include, putting your hands in ice, voicing it outloud or putting a hand over your heart and reminding yourself it’s okay. For physical tension, she recommends a body scan.

26:30 Clearing Emotions that Get Stuck

Healing is hard work. A lot of times, people don’t want to deal with those emotions, but it is so essential to dive into these things to live a healthy life. Journaling is one way to help process emotions.

30:26 More About the Book

Serena poured her heart and soul into her book. She sat with it for a chunk of time with consideration to how her family would receive it. The book is interwoven with personal stories as well as stories from others so that people can relate and understand her message.
